Davydenko eases into US Open second round

27/08/2008

Russian fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko has eased through his first round match at the US Open in straight sets.

Davydenko beat Israel's Dudi Sela 6-3 6-3 6-3 as he attempts to get his season back on track.

The 27-year-old has not won back-to-back matches since June but has performed well at the US Open in recent years, making the semi-finals in 2006 and 2007.

Davydenko broke serve regularly and was not threatened on his own serve until the third set but by that time he had already gained an unassailable advantage and soon completed victory.

Meanwhile fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov won a tight match against Eduardo Schwank 7-5 4-6 7-5 7-6 7/5.

The 26th seed earned vital breaks of serve at the end of the first and third sets to gain a two sets to one lead and then narrowly won a fourth set tie-break to set up a second round tie against Victor Hanescu. The Romanian beat Spain's Albert Montaes 7-6 6-3 2-6 6-3.

Home favourite Robbie Ginepri comfortably defeated Amer Delic. The American cruised through the first two sets dropping just three games in total before being forced into a tie-break in the third leg. He eventually won 6-1 6-2 7-6 7/5.

Former world number one Carlos Moya was forced to work hard by Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi for his place in the second round. The Spaniard won 6-4 6-7 7/5 7-6 7/2 6-2.

Elsewhere, Spain's Nicolas Almagro served 20 aces to get past Canada's Frank Dancevic, the 18th seed won 6-3 6-4 7-5.

Almagro will play American wild card Sam Warburg in the next round, who won his match against world number 45 Janko Tipsarevic who had to retire after the first set due to injury.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18751748-ADNFCR
