Federer to make Madrid comeback
10/10/2008
World number two Roger Federer has confirmed his attendance at the Madrid Masters to play his first tournament in three weeks, the organisers have said.
The Swiss star, who lost his place at the top of the world rankings to Rafael Nadal earlier this season, took an extended break from the ATP Tour after a gruelling schedule, which culminated in his victory at the US Open in early September.
However, the Madrid Masters tournament director Manolo Santana said Federer, who won the title in 2006 and finished runner-up to David Nalbandian last year, will play at Casa de Campo Park next week.
"It was really great news to know we are counting on Federer's participation once again this year," Santana said.
"He's a champion and undoubtedly one of the favourites for the title."
Santana said Federer would be arriving in Madrid tomorrow to begin his preparations and backed the 13-time grand slam winner to do well.
"Madrid conditions and court surface are the best for the way Federer plays," he continued.
"I hope he is 100 per cent in shape so that we can enjoy his best tennis."
The Madrid Masters will also see US Open finalists Andy Murray return to the ATP Tour for the first team since his defeat to Federer in straight sets at Flushing Meadows on September 9th.
