I can win Grand Slams, claims Murray
04/08/2008
New world number six Andy Murray has claimed he has the ability to win Grand Slam tournaments in the future after earning his first Masters series victory in Cincinnati.
The British number one edged out world number three Novak Djokovic on the Ohio hard courts 7-6 7-6 to claim his first trophy on the prestigious Masters section of the ATP tour - triumphing from a field of players that also included the world's top two, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
And afterwards, Murray said the win has given him renewed confidence that a Grand Slam victory is not beyond his grasp.
"I've never been past the quarters of a Slam before so there's still a long way to go," he said.
"But with my results here it's showed me I have the potential to do it.
"I think I have the game to win the Slams but it's just a matter of putting it all together for two weeks."
Of his victory over Djokovic - who he has now beaten twice in succession after suffering four consecutive defeats in their first four meetings - Murray said it was an "extra special" win.
"I was happy with the way I fought and stayed in there," he explained.
"I put in a lot of work off the court in order to be able to win this sort of tournament and this makes it all worthwhile."
He added: "At the beginning of the second set the standard dropped a bit and at the start of the first set.
"The end of the first and second sets was really tough for both of us but I tried to stay calm and made sure I stuck to my gameplan and I was able to do that."
