Ivanovic crashes to shock loss in Montreal
01/08/2008
World number one Ana Ivanovic has suffered a shock third-round defeat to 17-year-old Tamira Paszek at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
The top seed was inconsistent and appeared demotivated and lacking in concentration, which manifested itself in complaints of a thumb injury ahead of the Olympics next week, as she succumbed to her junior opponent 6-2 1-6 6-2.
The Serbian was looking for a decent run in her first tournament back on the WTA Tour since crashing out at Wimbledon in the first week.
But she was immediately on the back foot against Austrian youngster Paszek - losing her first two service games to go 4-0 down in the first set before losing out 6-2.
Nerves appeared to get the better of Paszek at the start of the second set however, and she seized up slightly as Ivanovic took the upper hand to square the match.
But the decider saw the Serbian's error-strewn display in the first set resurface as her opponent broke serve twice more to record a famous win over a woman ranked 93 places higher than her.
