Ivanovic defeated by qualifier at US Open
29/08/2008
World number one Ana Ivanovic has been knocked out of the US Open in the second round by French qualifier Julie Coin.
Coin, ranked 187 places below Ivanovic, recorded the shock 6-3 4-6 6-3 win last night and will now face Amelie Mauresmo in the third round.
The result is the earliest exit by a top seed at the US Open since 1968.
Talking after her win, Coin told reporters: "Today I felt nervous at the beginning and then it went away," said Coin.
"I don't know how I did it. I am not thinking about anything right now. Just enjoying the moment."
Ivanovic admitted she may have underestimated her opponent heading into the match.
"This is very disappointing to me but something I have to accept," she said.
"I never saw her play before so I didn't know what to expect. She played a lot better than I expected. She served very well."
Earlier this summer the world number one was forced to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics due to injury but she claimed it was not a factor in her losing at Flushing Meadows.
"Today I didn't feel it. I'm just happy to be back on track without pain," she said.
"Now all I have to do is put some hard yards on the court and go back out there and work hard."
Ivanovic won the French Open earlier this year but suffered a disappointing Wimbledon, losing to China's Zheng Jie.
