Jankovic and Dementieva through in New York
28/08/2008
Second seed Jelena Jankovic and fifth seed Elena Dementieva both qualified for the third round of the US Open, but in contrasting styles on the third day of competition.
Jankovic, who is hoping to overturn a small deficit to snatch the world number one spot from Ana Ivanovic at Flushing Meadows, was made to work hard by world number 63 Sofia Arvidsson.
A marathon match finished 6-3 6-7 6-4 to the Serbian, but not before the Swede broke her opponent in the second set when she had the chance to serve for the match and recovered from 3-0 down in the decider to take it to the wire.
Eventually Jankovic overcame Arvidsson's resistance when she broke again to go 5-4 up in the third and served out in two hours and 44 minutes.
The major shock of the second round saw eighth seed Vera Zvonareva lose in straight sets, 6-3 6-3, to the Ukraine's Tatiana Perebiynis.
However, there was never any hint of an upset in Dementieva's second round match as she cruised past France's Pauline Parmentier 6-2 6-1.
The Russian will now face Britain's Anne Keothavong in the third round on Friday.
