Jankovic continues purple match with victory in Russia
12/10/2008
World number one Jelena Jankovic continued her impressive season by beating Vera Zvonareva 6-2 6-4 to win the Kremlin Cup.
The Serb won her third WTA title in three weeks after seeing off the home favourite in one hour and 21 minutes.
Jankovic, who has yet to win a grand slam tournament, made an explosive start and broke for a 2-0 lead, and the 23-year-old repeated the trick to clinch the set in just 33 minutes.
The second set was more competitive with Jankovic breaking twice before being broken herself by the world number nine to keep the scores level.
But the Serb gained a crucial break in game nine on her way to sealing her third straight victory over the Russian.
Jankovic, who has played in six finals this year, said she was expecting a tough match.
"I was really focused from the start of the match. I went out there aggressive and really played my game and I was really going after the shots," she explained.
"Especially the first set I played quite well. I was dominating. But then the second set my level of tennis went down a little bit and I let her come back into the match.
"At the end of the second set I focused a little bit and changed the match in my favour."
The victory sees Jankovic add to her victories at the China Open and the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany.
