Jankovic set to become women's world number one
03/08/2008
Jelena Jankovic is set to become world number one when the WTA announces its rankings on August 11th.
Jankovic will take over from fellow Serbian Ana Ivanovic who will be a mere eight points behind her at that stage.
The WTA tour is taking a break from its usual schedule of competitions because of the Olympics and Jankovic is due to take over from Ivanovic while the Games are on.
Ivanovic looked to have handed the chance to be number one to Jankovic when she lost in the third round of the Rogers Cup, only for Jankovic to lose in the quarter-finals.
However, with the way the rankings are calculated on a rolling 52-week basis, Jankovic will take over top spot a week later than she would have had she won the Rogers Cup.
The 23-year-old said becoming world number one was a dream come true.
"Since I was a young girl, it has been my dream to become No 1 in the world," said Jankovic.
"When you get older, at least one day you can say you were No 1 and no one can take that away from you. You are in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour history books and it's a great achievement."
Ivanovic has struggled during her brief spell as number one. The French Open champion took over when Justine Henin retired from the professional circuit but has crashed out of tournaments early since her win at Roland Garros.
