Jankovic wins to reclaim number one spot

06/10/2008

Jelena Jankovic has returned to the top of world rankings in women's tennis after beating Nadia Petrova in straight sets in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.

The Serbian was in dominant form in the Stuttgart showpiece, frequently hitting superb winners down the lines and picking apart the Russian in methodical fashion for a 6-4 6-3 victory.

The title is Jankovic's second in a row on the WTA Tour after winning the China Open in Beijing last time out.

She said: "I'm very proud of winning my second tournament in a row.

"It was not easy coming here from China and I had very tough matches against [Vera] Zvonareva and Venus [Williams], but I'm thrilled to win.

"This is a great event - one of my favorite tournaments - and having both my parents and my godfather and his wife here made it extra special.

"I wasn't at the highest level but I'm happy I was able to hang in there in the end and be the champion."

Jankovic's victory underlined her standing as the best player in women's tennis at the moment, especially after her predecessor in the top spot - Serena Williams - lost her opening match of the tournament to a gutsy Li Na earlier last week.

Other than Jankovic and Williams trading places, the rest of the top ten rankings remain unchanged.
