Murray: US Open is my best chance to win a slam
25/08/2008
Andy Murray is optimistic about his chances of winning his first grand slam title at the US Open over the next two weeks.
Murray says he feels the hard court surfaces of America suit his game best and he believes he is in a good run of form that should see him do well at Flushing Meadows.
The Scot won the junior title at the US Open when he was coming through the ranks and has always enjoyed playing in the US ever since.
"I don't know exactly why it is but I always feel comfortable here," said Murray.
"I love New York as a city. When I missed Wimbledon last year I realised how much it meant to me. I always want to play great at Wimbledon and do well there but just for my personality, I think the US Open and New York suits me better."
The 21-year-old will face Argentinean Sergio Roitman who is currently ranked 102 in the world in his first round match.
Before Murray crashed out of the Olympic tennis tournament in the opening round he had just won his first Masters series crown and he is hoping to build on that breakthrough.
He said: "I just think for me, this is my best surface. I've said it all along: I think I play my best tennis here, I feel most comfortable on the courts, my results have shown that I've always played well in America. So, yeah, I think this is my best chance for winning a slam."
If Murray can win at the US Open he would become the first British man to win a grand slam title since Fred Perry won the US Open in 1936.
