Murray admits early frustrations in Cincinnati

31/07/2008

Andy Murray has admitted it took him some time to acclimatise to the conditions at the Cincinnati Masters this week because of the speed of the balls off the court.

The British number one showed signs he was struggling to adapt early on in his match against American Sam Querrey as he went down a break early on to trail 1-4 in the first set.

However, he pulled himself back on track to force a tiebreak - which he dominated from start to finish - before racing into a 4-0 lead in the second set.

Querrey stemmed the tide by breaking back in the fifth game of the second but Murray showed his class as he took the next two games with some superb winners and well-judged positional play to seal a 7-6 6-1 victory.

And afterwards, the Scot said it had taken him a while to get used to the conditions in Ohio, especially because he had become more used to evening and night matches recently.

"I didn't feel that comfortable on the court, it's so fast here compared with last week [at the Toronto Masters]," he told Sky Sports afterwards.

"The balls are flying around and you feel like you can't really swing at the ball as hard as you could last week.

"I've played a lot of matches at night - my last few matches the balls have been dead and here they're flying though the air so quick and I was struggling to control the ball, so I was getting a bit frustrated.

"But once I calmed down and played a few more games I started to serve better and obviously won comfortably in the second set."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18709667-ADNFCR
