Murray outclasses Tursunov to advance in Cincinnati
31/07/2008
Andy Murray has reached the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over Dmitry Tursunov.
The British number one came into the match with the 4-0 win/loss record against the big-hitting Russian. But the first set was tight as the players exchanged a break of serve each, before Murray broke back twice to take it.
Murray raised his game in the second set and after an early break of serve, he eased through the set and held his serve without any trouble to keep up his unbeaten run against Tursunov.
The match started perfectly for Murray as he broke Tursunov in the very first game. He saved break points on his own serve to take a 3-1 lead. But the young Scot was unable to win his next service game and Tursunov hit back to make it 3-3.
Tursunov then had an awful service game of his own and two double-faults gifted Murray the game and a 4-3 lead. Murray then held his serve and a booming forehand winner on the Tursunov serve saw Murray break for a third time to take the set 6-3.
Murray started the second set brilliantly and broke Tursunov with a trademark double-handed backhand winner. After establishing a 3-0 lead in the second set and with the volatile Russian looking flustered, there was only going to be one winner. Murray had no trouble holding onto his serve and won the second set and match 6-3.
Murray now has a great opportunity to reach his second consecutive Masters Series semi-final as he will face either Russian Igor Andreev or veteran Spaniard Carlos Moya in the quarter-finals.
