Murray targets US Open title
04/09/2008
Andy Murray has said he is not content with having reached the US Open semi-finals and wants to go on and win the tournament.
The Scot, 21, faces world number one Rafael Nadal in the last-four tomorrow night - a man he has never beaten in five competitive encounters.
However, Murray believes his current form - which, with the exception of the Olympic Games in Beijing, has seen him reach at least the quarter-finals at each of his last four tournaments could see him record a shock win and make the final.
"I understand getting to the semis is a great achievement but I want to go a little bit further," Murray said.
"I said at the start of the tournament, I want to try to win it. I don't want to lose in the semi-finals.
"When you watch the opening of the tournament on the first night session and see all the winners of the US Open, you realise that winning is what really, really counts."
Nadal admitted he faces a tough match against Murray, who is due to rise to at least fourth in the world next week regardless of the outcome of the semi-final.
"It's going to be difficult. I'm going to have to play my best," said the Spaniard, who is also making his US Open semi-final debut.
"He is high on confidence and he's doing very well. I expect a very tough match."
Nadal added: "I'm very happy to be in the semi-finals of the US Open.
"You want to play well in all tournaments and in the past I have not always done well here."
