Murray up to career-best sixth in world rankings

04/08/2008

Andy Murray has moved up three places to a career-high of sixth in the latest ATP Tour tennis world rankings.

The Briton recorded his maiden Masters series victory, beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Cincinnati tournament in Ohio last night.

And that result, coupled with superb recent performances in reaching the Canadian Masters semi-finals and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and Queen's Club, has bolstered his position in the standings.

Murray, who is also up to fifth in the ATP Race rankings - based solely on results from this calendar year, effectively swaps places with American Andy Roddick, who drops from sixth to ninth.

Russia's Nikolay Davydenko moves up one place above David Ferrer of Spain into fifth - the only other change in the top ten.

There are two non-movers at the top of the rankings, with Roger Federer continuing his record streak as world number one, but this is due to change in two weeks' time when the new rankings are released on August 18th.

By reaching the semi-finals in Cincinnati, where he lost to Djokovic, current number two Rafael Nadal has ensured he will have enough points to usurp the Swiss star at the top of the rankings this month.

The Spaniard could have moved above him this week if he had gone on to win the tournament.

Latest world's top ten in ATP rankings:

1- Roger Federer
2- Rafael Nadal
3- Novak Djokovic
4- Nikolay Davydenko
5- David Ferrer
6- Andy Murray
7- David Nalbandian
8- James Blake
9- Andy Roddick
10- Stanislas WawrinkaADNFCR-8000014-ID-18713806-ADNFCR
