Nadal and Federer progress in Beijing
13/08/2008
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have both reached the quarter-finals in the Beijing Olympics.
Nadal, who will replace Federer as world number one once the tournament concludes, overcame Russia's Igor Andreev in a comprehensive 6-4 6-2 victory.
Federer meanwhile beat Tomas Berdych 6-3 7-5 (7-4), gaining a small measure of revenge for his second round exit at the hands of the Czech in Athens four years ago.
Swiss star Federer is in Beijing to win his Olympic medal and reverse a slump in fortunes that has seen him fail to claim a major title in 2008.
But 22-year-old Nadal scheduled to meet Federer in the final should both players progress warned his opponents he was playing some of the best tennis of his life.
"I am playing close to my best level. My goal is to try to continuing playing like this."
Nadal is likely to play world number three Novak Djokovic in the semis after the Serb beat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
