Nadal usurps world number one Federer
18/08/2008
Rafael Nadal has ended Roger Federer's four-and-a-half-year stint at the top of tennis' world rankings, just one day after claiming gold in Beijing.
The Spaniard scooped the tennis title at the 2008 Olympic Games by beating Chile's Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets in the final.
And after the latest world rankings update was announced by the ATP Tour today, it was confirmed that Nadal has ended Federer's record 237-week stay at the top.
Nadal has been hailed as the unofficial world number one since he beat Federer in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer - which halted his Swiss opponent's five-year reign at the All England Club.
This followed Nadal's dominant performance in the French Open against Federer, which the 22-year-old won in straight sets.
Nadal moves up to the number one spot after spending more than three years as number two behind Federer.
