Russian Safina continues red-hot form to win in Montreal
03/08/2008
Dinara Safina won her second title in a fortnight after beating Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-1 to lift the Montreal Cup.
The Russian needed just 68 minutes to beat the unseeded Slovakian, clinching her third title in her last six tournaments.
Safina made an explosive start, breaking Cibulkova in her first service game to race into a 3-0 lead. The French Open runner-up broke the 19-year-old again on her way to taking the opening set.
The seventh seed continued her dominance in the second set, breaking twice to lead 4-0.
Cibulkova was a shadow of the player who had beaten seeds Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova, Jelena Jankovic, and Marion Bartoli on her way to the final.
Safina served out the set to clinch victory and notch up her 27th win from 30 matches since May.
Safina said she is delighted with her consistency this season.
"It's the first time in my life I have won tournaments back-to-back," Safina said.
"Usually I would win a tournament and the next week I would lose in the first round.
"So I was happy when I won the first match and then I was just taking it one match at a time."
The unseeded Cibulkova, who was seeking her first WTA tournament win, is set to break into the top 20 for the first time.
