Serena sets up all-Williams Wimbledon final

03/07/2008

Serena Williams beat Zheng Jie in straight sets to follow up her elder sister's semi-final victory earlier in the day and set up a third all-Williams Wimbledon ladies' final.

In an intriguing contrast between the pure aggression of Williams and the style, finesse and clean hitting of Zheng, it was the American who emerged victorious 6-2 7-6 after a dominant display.

Williams was in charge throughout the first set as she broke her Chinese opponent twice and looked to be set for an easy victory.

Zheng, ranked outside the top 100 in the world, only qualified for the main draw after being handed a wildcard by the organisers.

She belied her poor record in singles to knock out Ana Ivanovic in the third round and showed some of her renowned battling qualities to put up a fight in the second set.

A rain interruption looked to have thrown Williams out of her stride as Zheng broke the American's until-then dominant serve.

However, despite holding the advantage, Zheng was broken back and the set went to a tiebreak.

And the superior aggression of Williams again came to the fore with some booming groundstroke winners to set up a match point.

The Chinese then duly obliged with a double fault to hand the match to Williams and earn her a third meeting with Venus.

The younger sibling will surely be the more confident - having defeated her sister in both past meetings in 2002 and 2003, despite trailing in overall experience at the All England Club.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18669440-ADNFCR
