Venus remains seventh in world rankings

07/07/2008

Despite winning the Wimbledon women's title Venus Williams remains in an unchanged position in the official world rankings.

The five-time champion is in seventh position, two places behind her sister Serena, whom she defeated in Saturday's final.

Despite her early exit from the All England Club Ana Ivanovic remains ranked number one in the world thanks to her victory in the French Open, while Jelena Jankovic moves into second place.

Jankovic overtakes Maria Sharapova whose shock second-round exit sees her drop to third.

She may remain in seventh place in the rankings, but Venus Williams has set her sights on trying to catch Martina Navratilova's record of nine Wimbledon singles titles.

"Matching Martina's total would be the ultimate, but Martina's career spanned three decades so I'm not sure if I have that much time. If I did, I think I would definitely dream of that," Williams said.

Navratilova herself stated that she believed at the Williams sisters could soon be back as the number one and two ranked female tennis players in the world.

"A couple of years ago people thought Venus was finished and reckoned she would focus on her fashion interests but here she is, winning back-to back Wimbledon titles," she said.

"We've got two superstars back in the fold and either could end up being No.1 again by the end of the year.

"Venus has joined the small group of women to have won a grand slam tournament five times, but she has been a great champion for a long time."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18673322-ADNFCR
