Williams sisters win doubles gold
17/08/2008
Venus and Serena Williams have secured an Olympic gold medal after they defeated Spain in the women's doubles in Beijing.
Both had been below-par in the singles tournament but the Wimbledon doubles champions showed they excel at both forms of the game to win the gold in the doubles.
They won the final comfortably, defeating Spanish duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-2 6-0.
In the women's singles Russian Elena Dementieva won gold by beating compatriot Dinara Safina in the final.
Safina looked to be in a winning position after claiming the first set but Dementieva won a tight second set before winning 3-6 7-5 6-3.
Russia claimed a clean sweep of the women's singles thanks to Vera Zvonareva's win over China's Li Na in the bronze medal match.
