British women scoop medals in 10km swim

20/08/2008

The Team GB duo of Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten have won two more medals at the Beijing Olympics, taking silver and bronze in the women's 10km swim.

The British pair had led the way for the majority of the race but were overhauled by the favourite, Russia's Larisa Ilchenko, just 100m from the end in a dramatic finish.

At the line, the difference between the top three swimmers was no more than a couple of strokes after almost two hours of competition.

Germany's Angela Maurer finished a distant fourth after the top three pulled away from the field in the closing stages.

But the power of the Russian was too much for the Britons as Payne and Patten were forced to settle for the minor medals.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18740314-ADNFCR
