Ipswich abandon plans to sign Ameobi

19/08/2008

Ipswich Town have abandoned their pursuit of Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi after a medical revealed the striker is suffering from a hamstring problem.

Ameobi looked set to sign for the Portman Road outfit having agreed a fee with Newcastle, but at the last minute the deal appears to have collapsed.

"It's disappointing but you have to be careful with hamstring injuries," Ipswich boss Jim Magilton told the club's official website.

"We don't want a repeat of last season when Shefki Kuqi joined us and suffered a hamstring injury in his first game."

Ipswich may wish to renew the deal in January if Ameobi has recovered from his problem, but Ipswich's local rivals Norwich City may now renew their interest in the former England under-21 international.
