Megson "bitterly disappointed" at Northampton defeat
27/08/2008
Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson has said he is "bitterly disappointed" at his side's 2-1 defeat to Northampton Town in the Carling Cup.
Two goals form Adebayo Akinfenwi sent ten-man Bolton crashing out of the second round of the tournament last night.
"We set off OK in terms of going forward but we always looked somewhat susceptible on the break," Megson said.
"We gambled a couple of times in not defending properly and when you do that you've got your fingers crossed hoping you've got it right. On two occasions it didn't happen."
An 82nd minute strike from Kevin Nolan offered Bolton some hope of a result but the League One team managed to hold on to record an impressive victory at the Reebok Stadium.
"Going forward, we were very good until they scored. Once that happened the whole atmosphere about the place changed," Megson admitted.
Bolton's cause was not helped when Gary Cahill was sent off in the 32nd minute for a raised foot.
Megson said he had no complaints over the dismissal but was disappointed to no longer be in the tournament.
"Gary shouldn't have been going for that ball. He should have dropped off because he was never going to win it. It's a bad thing to happen to us on the night and is compounded by the fact that he will miss three games," the Bolton manager said.
"The fact that we are not in the cup is bitterly disappointing."
