Academies/Publicly Funded Independent Schools in Manchester and Area

Academies are publicly funded (state funded) independent schools which are directly funded by the Department for Education and are independent of local authority control.

Most academies are referred to as Secondary Schools as well, though confusingly, not all are. So to ensure you don't miss any please check the secondary schools pages too.

Academies don't have to follow the national curriculum and can set their own term times. But they still have to follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as all other state schools.

Academies/Free Independent schools receive their money directly from the government, and not from the local council. They're run by an academy trust which in turn employs the school staff.

Some academies have sponsors such as businesses, universities, other schools, faith groups or voluntary groups. Sponsors are responsible for improving the performance of their schools.
