One of the reasons why Robbie Williams is such an all-conquering star is of course his talent for shameless self-promotion, but the main one has to be the song-writing abilities of Guy Chambers. Where would Robbie be without Angels after all? Now the partnership has split and Chambers is free to indulge himself in less bombastic forms of music, which is where the Isis Project comes in.
Not many Robbie fans will be buying this, but that really isn't what Chambers wants from it. After all, if he was aiming for the teeny-bopper market, he might have chosen not to have all the songs sung in French... Thankfully, he was aiming for people with rather more mature musical tastes, or rather a person with rather more mature musical tastes - himself. This is a deeply personal album for Chambers, inspired by his wife and his child. He describes it as: "first and foremost an 18th birthday present for my four-year old daughter, Isis." Hence the title... The music itself, with the languid French vocals of actress Sophie Hunter, is very much chilled-out pop. Chambers himself has said that it has a "laid-back, Sunday morning feel", and that is pretty much spot-on. You wouldn't get a stadium full of a people to sing along, but you would get anyone who listens to it instantly feeling more relaxed. The Gallic flavour of Hunter's singing almost takes it towards some of Air's less electronic offerings, and certainly gives it a sophisticated feel. L'onde Amere is a real stand-out track, with the orchestral backing and a tinkling piano driving the music onwards to new heights. Chere Isis was the song that started it all, written by Chambers five years ago after the birth of his daughter, and eventually translated into French, sparking off the idea for the Project. When she gets her present in 12 years time, I'm sure she'll love it. In the meantime, we can all treasure a very special album that shows just what Robbie will be missing as he ploughs on alone.
