Dido - Live At Brixton Academy DVD
HOME LOCAL BANDS

Dido is many things, but is she a live musician worthy of a DVD? Well, clearly her record company think so, and that's no surprise as she is about as much of a radio friendly unit shifter as anyone these days, so why not shift some units in the visual department?

Live At Brixton Academy

She's pretty photogenic, which certainly helps on DVD, especially as there isn't much else to see in the 'cosy' confines of the Brixton Academy, and with a fairly low-key stage show.

Of course, Dido is one of those artists who have been tarred with the description 'bland' and there is a slight feeling of that here too. Her songs certainly don't get radical overworkings in the live arena, which does rather make it seem a bit like listening to her albums with the volume turned up a bit.

It's all shot in soft focus too, just to make sure any rough edges are firmly smoothed out and to take away any hint of rock 'n' roll. You can't argue with one thing though, and that is that Dido does what she does very well and hits like Life For Rent, Hunter, Thankyou and White Flag are all belted out nicely with good support form her backing band.

The crowd are mostly absent from proceedings, but maybe it's like that at Dido gigs, it certainly can't be easy to get too worked up about the music. She chats aimably with them at times, reminiscing about her days of going to gigs there and some other stuff, though it's strangely difficult to hear what she's saying.

Never mind, as no-one really wants to know anyway, that's not what you buy a music DVD for, apart from some exclusive interviews, etc as bonus features. If that is what you want, I should warn you know that there isn't any on this DVD, although there is the rather nice extra of an audio CD of 12 of the 17 tracks, basically giving you a live CD for free. Can't say fairer than that...
