Patrick Duff - Luxury Problems
HOME LOCAL BANDS

Patrick Duff, formerly of indie band Strangelove, strikes out on his own with solo debut album Luxury Problems and the title pretty much says it all. Like Morrissey, Duff has a knack of writing great lyrics about the mundane troubles faced by people who don't really have any problems.

Luxury Problems

Some albums you just know will be good from the opening chords, and this is one of them. Spiky guitar chords bounce around at the start of Married With Kids before Duff's story of marital 'bliss' kicks off (literally).

While his singing voice might not be the greatest, Duff's cinematic story-telling style more than makes up for it: "Six hours later he's going to work, she's crashed out wearing only a smirk. She's Adolf Hitler, he's Eva Braun. Screwed up in their bunker with the gas turned on."

Of course, even great storytellers sometimes have to be blunt, and third track Fucked is just that. Backed by a plaintive piano line, Duff is brutally honest with himself in the chorus: "Don't you know? You're the only one who knows how fucked I am, my love." There's something quite romantic in there somewhere...

In My Junkie Clothes is much more upbeat musically, if not lyrically. Crunching guitars and a shouty chorus make for an entertaining few minutes, even if the content of the lyrics is a bit more simplistic. Fortunately, that is restored in the excellent DJ Yoga, which tells the story of a man whose girl left him for a yoga teacher.

King Of The Underworld has an early Tom Waits feel to it, and is a sign that Duff has clearly moved on since life in Strangelove. This is truly a timeless debut album by a great English talent and one that will hopefully be allowed to flourish in years to come.
