Three years after this show was recorded in Detroit, it seems like a slightly strange time for Eminem's first live DVD to emerge. However, as it coincides with the announcement of the European leg of Anger Management 2005 (which stops off at Lancashire County Cricket Ground on 14th September), then it's certainly a pretty good advertisement for that...
It's also a great show to have on DVD, with the stage set featuring a Ferris Wheel, ringleader, midgets and a 'naked' bodysuit-wearing contortionist. Oh, and some very fat lady dancers. As well as that, it finds Slim Shady at what was probably his peak, just after the release of his most accomplished album The Eminem Show. It features very strongly in the set, with opening trio Square Dance, Business and White America as well as hits Cleanin Out My Closet, Without Me, Superman and Sing For The Moment. There's some older hits missing, but the likes of Kill You and Stan get aired. There's also time for a mini D12 set (lucky for us, eh?) which finishes off with Purple Pills. The hometown crowd go crazy for their hero and are rewarded with lots of shouts of "Detroit!" in return from Eminem and various rappers who join him on stage. Of course, you can question just how hip-hop this really is when you see the crowd singing along to clips of Dido and Aerosmith ballads, while there's certainly none of the sense of danger present, unless you happen to be a rich conservative white person who doesn't like swearing or songs about STDs. There's also a behind the scenes documentary from the tour and other sundry extras, though the show is more than worth the price of admission on its own. By the way, Anger Management 2005 will have Eminem headlining with 50 Cent, D12, Obie Trice, Stat Quo (who may or may not be performing Rocking All Over The World) and Flipsyde. Basically, it's the hip-hop event of the UK year...
