Does humour belong in music? The late, great Frank Zappa was asked that question and his reply was obviously affirmative, so he'd probably love Goldie Lookin' Chain. They burst onto the scene last year like a Welsh chav version of the Bloodhound Gang, dressed up in bling and shellsuits but obviously too witty to actually be the Newport miscreants they portrayed themselves to be and now they are back already, showing a work ethic that no true chav would adopt.
Their ability for self-promotion was shown when they were (bizarrely) chosen to sing before the Wales-England game and dedicated Your Missus Is A Nutter to Posh Spice, becoming heroes to fans of both nations. That single is here on Safe As Fuck (nice album title...), and displays not only the humour but also the catchy tunes that the GLC specialise in and that is what makes them more than just a joke band. One of the thing that makes these rascals so appealing is that, unlike the Bloodhound Gang, their songs are literally splattered with references that we can all get. Claims Direct, minging, Jason Orange and Hayley Cropper all get mentioned and, like with Peter Kay's stand-up shows, the familiarity makes it all funny. Of course, there's also all the potty talk, sexual references and daft hip-hop lingo ('he's the G with the CSE') that you'd expect. Not to mention those Welsh accents that make opener Newport In The House so amusing, particularly when they refer to it as the NPT. It's a bit like watching Tim Westwood trying to be Xzibit on Pimp My Ride UK, though at least the GLC aren't being serious about thinking they're from the ghetto, so it's not quite as painful. Bad Boy Limp is the tale of how to get free cash by chopping off some toes and ringing Claims Direct, which also gives you a 'gangsta lean'. Shit Song is probably the highlight, hitting out at rubbish dance songs that all sound the same: 'this is just another shit song what you hear in a nightclub', they opine over a generic dance beat. It's bang on the nail, mentioning the ringtone, the video with just a girl in a thong and how it somehow works its way into your head after hearing it over and over again everywhere you go. R'n'B finds them turning themselves into a fairly convincing boyband to impress a girl, while Monkey Love with its vocal effects could easily be by someone like Daniel Bedingfield if it wasn't about having sex with a monkey. HRT and Short Term are about the dangers of doing drugs (basically turning into a woman and losing your short term memory), but the GLC are much too savvy to actually try and do it in a serious way. It's hardly a classic and the jokes will wear thin after a few listens, but the music is good enough to carry it through on most tracks. Nobody over the age of 30 will buy this, but for anyone who thinks Frank Zappa was right, this is about as good as humour gets in music...
