Gratitude call themselves an 'un-super group', having risen from the ashes of semi-successful bands like Far and Crumb. However that is a little unfair on themselves, as they are actually pretty darn super on their own terms.
Jonah Matranga and Mark Weinburg founded the band in 2003, 11 years after their original bands first crossed paths. A few months later, they played some of their new songs to record company execs and were signed up on the spot. Listening to their debut album, it's easy to see why, as Gratitude (soon to be playing in Manchester with label-mates Funeral For A Friend) have the uncommon knack of writing great tuneful songs with hard edges, somehow combining epic rock with Jimmy Eat World pop-punk sensabilities. Single Drive Away was the perfect sampler for their talents and makes a great opener to the album as well. This Is The Part could easily be another single, with Matranga's vocals soaring above the power chords and sticking firmly in your head. They do have a softer side as well, as showcased on Someone To Love (one of the most over-used song titles around, but never mind), which certainly isn't a power ballad, but is a very nice melodic tune. However, they are much more at home with anthemic hook-filled rockers like Another Division St. The band claim that their music is 'for everyone', hoping that they will see mullets, horn-rimmed glasses and mohawks all mixing at their shows, and while it might be a bit too college rock for some of the mohawks, they are bound to pick up plenty of fans on tour with Funeral. Gratitude is what you will feel when you get this CD, if that's not too cheesy a way to end this review...
