R.Kelly must be one of the most complicated people in music nowadays. On one side of him you have the schmaltzy balladeer of I Believe I Can Fly, while on the other side you find a seemingly very horny man repeatedly accused of having sex with underage girls and who tried to marry Aaliyah when she was only 15.
One look at the song titles for TP.3 Reloaded is enough to see which side of his persona is represented here: Sex In The Kitchen, Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend, Hit It Till The Mornin, Touchin', Sex Weed, (Sex) Love Is What We Makin... Some of these are actually very sexy songs along the lines of Marvin Gaye or peak condition Prince, but some are just a bit creepy and rubbish. Sex Weed for example, sounds rather dodgy when you consider the alleged content of some of those alleged sex tapes he starred in, and even more so if you've ever seen Bo Selecta. Sex In The Kitchen is much better, with Kelly clearly cookin' (if you'll excuse a really bad pun), while Touchin' benefits from a rare bit of female participation from Nivea, who unsurprisingly smooths things out, much like her namesake. It's not quite all about getting down and dirty though, as Kelly wheels out The Game on single Playas Only and gets funky with Snoop Dogg on Happy Summertime, which could easily be a summer anthem if it gets released in the near future (ie before August when it starts raining). Elephant Man's appearance on Reggae Bump Bump is rather less welcome, as the cod reggae suits Kelly about as well as a camcorder lens. However, the main talking point of the album is the bizarre five park serial song Trapped In The Closet. Here, Kelly tells the rather convoluted tale of a bunch of rather unfaithful couples and the tangled webs their infidelities weave. Each song ends with a cliffhanger that is resolved in the next chapter. Apparently there are some more coming our way later this year, though we're not exactly holding our breath to find out what happens next...
