Chicago foursome The Redwalls have recently been wowing fans at the City of Manchester Stadium supporting Oasis, so hopefully lots of Gallagher acolytes will be checking out De Nova and they won't be disappointed.
Logan Baren, Justin Baren, and Andrew Langer are childhood friends and neighbours from Deersfield, Illinois who have been playing together since high school and joined up with drummer Ben Greeno to form The Redwalls. De Nova is their major label debut, recorded with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith) and they were in Manchester a couple of months ago supporting Nine Black Alps. Unlike the Alps, their sound is less Nirvana, more 60s and 70s rock - a kind of mash-up of the Beatles and the Black Crowes. They have a good line in chirpy pop songs like opener Robinson Crusoe and It's Alright but also a slightly darker side with the Lennon-esque Back Together and Falling Down. However, they also show on Build a Bridge that they have the knack for writing a real anthem that deserves to be sung along to by a stadium crowd of their own. There's a mellower side too on tracks like Hung Up On The Way I'm Feeling, which finds them in much more reflective mood. Album closer Glory of War even sees them going all Bob Dylan with an acoustic protest song. All three singers have decent voices and they are certainly excellent at emulating their heroes, making this a very familiar-sounding debut album, which is no bad thing. The question will be whether they can build on it to forge a style of their own.
