The North's Contribution To The Greatest Music Of The Millennium
The results of the latest and largest poll on music and musicians of the millennium has recently been announced. The poll was conducted throughout 1999 by HMV, Channel 4 and classic FM Radio. 600,000 votes were cast by UK music fans during the polling period who voted musicians from the north of England - in fact within a 30 mile radius of Manchester - into top positions in ALL categories. John Lennon
ABOVE: John Lennon

In 10 best songwriters category, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were voted 1st and 2nd respectively. Noel Gallagher was voted 6th and Robbie Williams 8th. An astonishing 4 out of the 10 greatest songwriters worldwide of the past 1000 years have therefore been produced from within a 30 mile radius centered on Manchester.

In the 10 best albums of the Millennium category, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was voted into 1st place with Revolver - again by the Beatles - grabbing 3rd spot.
The Stone Roses' album of the same name came in at number 6, followed by Oasis with (What's the Story) Morning Glory? at number 7 and Robbie Williams I've Been Expecting You at number 9.
So 5 out of the top 10 greatest albums of all time have been produced by musicians born within a 30 mile radius of Manchester city centre.

In the 10 most influential musicians of the Millennium category John Lennon was voted into top place, with Paul McCartney in 5th place and Robbie Williams in 6th place.

The 'Golden Triangle'

It seems extraordinary that this so-called golden triangle - extending just 30 miles South and West of Manchester - should produce so many great songwriters, bands, musicians and albums. That a few square miles should produce half of the top 10 greatest albums ever to be released to a worldwide audience is a truly outstanding achievement. Long may it continue into the next Millennium!
