Teppanyaki is an independent family business that has long been established as Manchester’s premier Japanese restaurant and uses the Teppanyaki style of cooking to create a dining experience like no other. Teppanyaki is a culinary art that has established itself as one of the favourites of the Japanese cuisine. Our review:
The long, communal dining tables and minimalist décor of Tampopo create an authentic atmosphere that compliments the selection of Pan Asian food on offer. There are dishes from all across East Asia, each carefully explained in a menu as thick as any we’ve ever seen (there is even a glossary at the end). The service is friendly and very efficient and prices are reasonable for a city-centre restaurant – and we can’t recommend the gyoza (little pork dumplings) highly enough.

Yaki Soba

Our Review:

When this place opened, we trotted down with our curious palettes to check it out and found it to be an absolute delight. It’s part of the same family that run the Golden Rice Bowl on Cross Street in the city-centre and the proprietor Bing is one of the most efficient and courteous guys we’ve ever come across. The food is Chinese and Thai with starters like the Dim Sum platters a must. Main courses like the Thai Style King Prawn come in Bento boxes with noodles and rice cooked to perfection and you get soup, salad and oranges to freshen up after. This may all sound like standard fare but trust us it’s cooked to extremely high standards and can hold its own with many of the top restaurants in the city centre.

Take-out service is also available and starts about £5 for a Bento box which is amazingly good value for money. The only problem being that if you’re eating in the constant flow of people picking up take-outs can be a bit annoying at busy times and it has been know to slow service in the restaurant itself.

Yo Sushi!

City Centre

Selfridges, Exchange Square Manchester M4
This long running Sushi chain offers a genuine Japanese dining experience from the inside of the Selfridges building. Placed on a revolving conveyor belt, freshly prepared dishes are temptingly passed under your nose, and you simply pick and choose you preferred dish of choice. With over 100 varieties to choose from, each with its own distinct taste and preparation style, this is a novel little restaurant and a genuinely interesting experience for those of you more accustomed to doting waiters. Your choice of meal isn’t just restricted to Sushi though and a range of meat dishes are available - we recommend the salmon teriyaki for sheer taste and value for money. The pleasant ambiance and the gentle whirring of the conveyor belt creates a relaxed atmosphere to dine in and you can’t help but wish that more restaurants were this laidback.
