By his own admission, Greens head chef Simon Rimmer couldn't even cook when he bought the restaurant. His background was in fashion design and he thought that if he owned a restaurant he could just swan around chatting up girls! When he realized he couldn't afford to pay a chef, he decided to learn to cook himself.
Admittedly it doesn't sound promising. But Greens has become one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Manchester. Awards it has won to date include:
City Life's Best Restaurant of the Year,
The Big Issue's Restaurant of the Year, Manchester Food and Drink Festival's Best Provision for Vegetarians (three times)
AA Rosette for quality of cooking.
The critics have been just as generous, with everyone from The Guardian to Didsbury Magazine singing the restaurant's praises.
Simon Rimmer has become something of a celebrity chef. He makes regular appearances on Saturday Kitchen on BBC1, UKTV Food and Richard and Judy and has also published two recipe books.
Despite all this, Greens remains a homely, unpretentious little restaurant. There aren't any fancy tricks on the menu, just imaginative veggie dishes featuring quality produce. The food is so good here that even people who love their meat will be surprised… and if you're veggie, you'll be in absolute heaven.

Great Food by Jimmy
I visted Greens last night 20/08/2010 with my partner and two friends. We all agreed that the food ( and wine) was exellent . My paternet who is a Vegetarian was in Vegetarian Heaven! and even the Meat eaters ,myself and two friends were impressed ! The only area that we felt a little dissapointed was with the staff who are not very talkative / freindly ,and on leaving the restaurant and leaving a tip , did not even have time for a good bye ! Food 11/10 - Staff 5/10
the best vegetarian restaurant in manchester? by warice
foodwise this must be in the top 3 exclusively vegetarian restaurants in the northwest. The environment could be improved by being a bit more intimate. Also could ideally have a bit more flare with the desserts. However I thoroughly recommend it.
Forget the rubbish, this was wonderful by mrboardman
To be honest, I worry for the sanity of some of these reviewers. That aside, not eveywhere is to everyone's taste and fancy. So, just let me say this... I am a dyed in the wool carnivore. I went with a guest to Greens because she had been before, she enjoyed it, and the online menu was very interesting. I was not dissappointed. From the moment we walked in to the final wobble out of the door, it was an excellent experience. The staff was attentive but not pushy; the wine selection was good and fairly priced; the food was without a single moment of doubt superb. Can I just make a special mention for the veggie black pudding. As a lover of these little beasts - from Bury specials to Spanish morcilla - I was totally gob-smacked at how good these faux versions were. I've no idea how they do it, but these would not have been shown up in down-town Madrid! Bloody lovely. Or not, as the case may be. The starter and following mains were equally as good and well deserving of our attention. To finish off (after a fine dessert) there was Pedro Ximenez. Not a fully aged 30-year old lovely, but a cheeky little teenager at 15 years... at least, that's my guess. A perfect end to a cracking night.
the 9.30 rule is a reason not to go by caz
It's a restaurant where you go to relax - wrong! I agree with previous comments - it's time they stopped treating eating like you are being clock watched by your boss during your lunch. I am a vegetarian but not that desperate.
Greens by Emma Bolton
My partner and I went to Greens looking forward to eating in a place that was for veggie/vegan people. To our disgust we found we were sat around animal eaters and even the waitress was an animal eater...we couldn't believe..we expected caring, animal lovers (the ones that respect their freedom to life) to be eating and working in their...god knows if the owner is vegan or veggie, if he/she is then they are totally immoral. Absolutely disgusted!
Splendid by Tana
My first visit to Greens today and it was a pleasure. The menu shows convidence and clarity, the food was well presented, delicate with complimentary flavours.Staff new the menu . Only comment I would make is that front of house need to meet and greet sooner and a few pictures wouldn't go amiss.
Extremely disappointed- Beware of the 9.30 rule! by S
Having not visited this restaurant for a number of years we were really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere and food now the restaurant has been extended. How disappointed we were with the experience and most noteably with the service. We had to correct the waitress on the orders for every course, we were not offered any additional drinks or liquers, were given the bill despite not having asked for it and told to leave (not politely asked)on the stroke of 9.30, which appears to have occured to other reviewers. We were not advised of the 9.30 vacation rule at the time of booking or on our arrival at the restaurant. We found the manner this was done rude and therefore will not be returning!
Disappointing by Jane
I have not been to Greens for a while but I went last night. I was immediately concerned when on arrival we were told the table had to be vacated by 21:30. I was not told this when I booked. The service was pretty average, the same as the food. The final insult was being charged £1.50 for a tiny scoop of ice cream to go with a desert for which I had already paid £5.50. We will not be going back.
The best!!! by p

The veggie black pudding has got to be my favourite....it just tastes so good!!! Finally a good restaurant where vegetarians aren't treated as an inconvenience! by lois
I have been to Greens many times and have been impressed every time. It's so great to have a choice of more than two dishes (as you get at most non veggie places) and not a veggie lasagne in sight! Love the roulade with blue cheese and the leek and mushroom strudel. Took boyfriend's meat eating parents here and they loved it. Great quality food beautifully cooked and not too expensive. My only criticism is that it can get a bit loud at busy times as it is such a small room. Oh well... you can't have everything!

Excellent choice, lovely atmosphere and excellent food. Must have the recipe for mushy peas.
I agree by
Couldn't agree more with the other reviews, this is the best vegetarian around.I wasn't a veggie when I went but I'd been thinking about it for a while and seeing all the delicious food helped me make up my mind. Especially because not everything was covered in cheese like a few places i could mention
