When the five-star Lowry Hotel unveiled its restaurant in 2001, Manchester’s foodie communities could barely contain their excitement. The River Room (as it was then called) was a Marco Pierre White restaurant, you see. As many of us remember, it didn’t quite work out like that. Marco Pierre White disappeared off into a blaze of glory somewhere far away from Manchester circa 2005, and River Room got a rebrand as River Restaurant and a new head chef, Eyck Zimmer. We mourned what could have been – until we tried the food. Then it was celebrations all round… The seasonal, locally-inspired menu is a testament to all that is potentially fantastic about English food, and the wine list is an exercise in good judgement. Add to this the excellent standards of service and you can be sure of a meal to set standards by. Zimmer knows what he’s doing and River Restaurant has never been as good. It is, of course, desperately expensive, but let’s face it - you will never, ever be able to create food that tastes like this.

5/105/105/105/105/10 Slightly dissapointing by Adam B

Did not book a table just walked in and found the Restaurant very quiet, Food was ok, but quality not 5*, service average an overpriced experience, will not hurry to return unless some else pays.

9/109/109/109/109/109/109/109/109/10 A pricey treat by Ben

I ate there at the weekend and I have to say that the quality of the food and the service was very good. Right from the concierge who knew who we were even though we were nearly 1/2 an hour late, to the witress who remembered us from our last visit over a year ago, the service was discreet, professional and friendly. The food is very good, quality produce cooked just the right way and the wine list, whilst not massive, is well chosen. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant, though you should expect to pay for the pleasure!

5/105/105/105/105/10 Not as good as the hype by Anon

Expected something really special eating here but in the end have to say i was disappointed. Dont get me wrong the food was good and so was the service, but from the reputation and the cost (ye gods!) i was hoping that this would be one of the best meals ever. Actually I think the food might be better at the French.

8/108/108/108/108/108/108/108/10 river room restaurant by Roy Marsden

Nice, lively restaurant, beautifully lit by natural light during lunch times and by subtle, sensitive lighting later in the evening. This is one of Manchester's lovliest locations to eat. Service perfect and not at all snotty as in so many London restaurants. Great wine list. Food was good though not quite in the spectacular category. A great place to go pre-theatre or concert as they offer a special discount
