As a newcomer to Manchester I was pursuaded by colleagues to try the Early Bird Banquet. The outside and decor is plain but the savouries set the tone, the starter ups the ante, and the main course is as good as it gets for under £9 excluding the service charge. Chicken that tastes like chicken (rare commodity these days)and clearly not frozen, with attentive staff wanting to make sure the Customer is satisfied without going overboard. As I work nearby the lunchtime sandwiches are going to take a bit of a back street view

Went on Saturday night and loved it, food was superb, tasted great and just the right portions. The surroundings, staff, service as well as the food cannot be faulted, looking forward to going back next time we are in Manchester

I went to Shimla Pinks on a friend's recommendation about six months ago and have been back four times since. Even though it doesn't look like much from the outside, inside it is really pretty. The service is friendly but never in-your-face. They've got a natural ingredients policy so there aren't any neon colours in the pilau rice (a pet hate) and there are some good offers on, but the best thing is the quality of food. The kerala molee is so good you'll wonder why you ever ate a korma and the keema aloo matar is incredible. The quality of the food is well above new pretenders like akbars or eastzeast and it isn't even expensive!

Shimlas forever by Phil Everett

This is the Indian that David Beckham used to use when he played for United. Although it looks as if the decor has not been changed in the interim, the food and service are as good as they have ever been. A great place to take the family.
