Our review: Luckily, Cup stepped in. Taking up the front section of Vox Pop Records, this quirky coffee shop has quickly become a favourite of the Northern Quarter. Contemporary artwork, prints and rare ceramics give it an arty vibe, while its laid-back atmosphere and bright décor earn it points as a good stop-off point for Saturday shoppers. And, with Vox Pop Records at the back of the café and Mr Scruff teas on offer at the counter, Cup also does a roaring trade among the city’s vinyl enthusiasts. There’s plenty to get involved in, from poetry nights to the Cup Bake Off (in which customers compete to add their own cakes to the pastry counter for a year, with 10% of the profits). It has hosted sets from Moby and For Folk’s Sake, has strong links with MAPs Festival and Queer Up North. It has lovely, crumbly cakes, gorgeous pies and exciting teas. Cup does a strong line in breakfasts and lunches, with the emphasis squarely on organically grown, locally sourced, ethically traded fare. Vegetarians are well catered for and health nuts have plenty to get excited about with the list of creatively titled fresh smoothies on offer – we suggest you try the Bob Marley Emancipation smoothie, which blends tropical fruit juice, summer fruits, bananas and fresh yoghurt. If you’re looking for something a little more substantial, the Pieminster pies are always a winner. The Heidi pie (goats cheese, sweet potato, red onion and roasted garlic) with minted peas and mash for £6 is an absolute bargain, though we think charging £1 for the gravy to go with it is a bit optimistic. On the downside, the service here can be a bit hit-or-miss. On some visits we’ve come out singing the praises of the waiting staff. Other times, we’ve been less pleased. We know Cup is a chilled-out place, but over an hour for a breakfast butty is pushing it. Despite this, we still find ourselves dropping in every time we pass. With lovely, crumbly cakes and exciting teas, plenty of random art to look at and invariably good tunes drifting out from Vox Pop, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon. |

storming out of Teacup by CP
Hopeful for some change of attitude in this initially great replacement to Love Saves the Day, I went in to meet friends. But I was the first to arrive. Since I was here last u now have to wait to be seated in the near empty space this Friday about 9.30 am. I declned a window seat and dared to choose my own table to be asked to sit elsewhere as I was alone. It seems I needed to explain my choice and thought: hey, you know what? You don't deserve my custom! And flounced out. Poor, very poor - get your front of house sorted - and ditch the attitude!

teacup brimming with 100% success! by Claudia
in the past, I felt uncomfortable stepping into the former 'cup', afraid i wasn't 'quirky' enough, perhaps I should have sported socks on my hands!! but now, well it's a totally different place, service amazing and very personable, attentive staff, with great knowledge of the products they are selling. The atmostphore is cosmopolitan cool, a healthy and refreshing break from the '5-haircuts in one/I'm in a band' look that I find in most N.Qu cafe. The food is outstanding quality and does not hold back on quantity = fantastic value for your money. Especially when considering the lifeless, mournful look of the staff in Oklahoma, that offer a plate of beans and toast with burnt bits and a dry after taste. Finally, the open plan, spacious and airy environment is welcoming, even inviting as i visited teacup on three consecutive day, just to make sure this place wasn't a 'one off'. It is consistently outstanding business from soup to service, I would urge you try to the carrot cake it is organic and outstanding!!

More Duff than Scruff by Gideon Bustard
Comparing Cup to the sadly missed Love Saves the Day is a bit like comparing a prize race horse with a lame donkey. Admittedly it’s a lame donkey owned by a rather cool local DJ. Whilst I want to like Cup I can’t quite get over the fact that when it comes to the basics, i.e. hot food, good service, it’s not delivering. The highlights of Cups slightly worthy, and mainly drink based, menu are definitely the quiche and the pies. The pies are from the rather brilliant Pieminister and bloody delicious they are too. Unfortunately the mash is slightly reminiscent of packet Smash and not really worth the extra cash. Also a quid for gravy is total daylight robbery. The quiches, particularly the mushroom and peppercorn one are also tasty especially with salad and homemade coleslaw but keep your fingers crossed it’s served warm all the way through as it frequently has a cold patch in the middle. In their selection of ready made sandwiches you’ll find such egg mayo, spinach and tomato chutney, sheeps cheese with rocket and mackerel and horseradish. Definitely more hmmm than mmmm. The thing about Cup is, it all feels slightly for show. There are always several reasonably good looking people behind the counter but, aside from scowling, they don’t really do much. The service is appalling, they take at least ten minutes to make a drink and quite frequently bring the drinks after the food has arrived. If you dare to complain they dart looks at each other as if to say ‘can you believe the cheek of this person wanting their food in under an hour!’ and slam your refund into your hand. The dead magpie in the window will get up and fly out of the door before any of the staff will consider offering an apology, even if you’ve been waiting over an hour and in the end seen your order given to another table who have started to eat it because they too are on the verge of dying of hunger. The cakes are all delicious. But, as with everything at Cup, they too have their downside. In this case it’s the price. A small slice of take away cake cost me £2.75. Which I felt was slightly too much. Like I said, I want to like Cup. I really do. But it just seems to me that Cup thinks that things like service and hot food aren’t important because, in their own heads, they are already way better than anyone else.
